Night Guards Overview
Bruxism, or grinding your teeth while you sleep, is a common problem that affects many men and women. Best Candidates for Night Guards
A number of symptoms may indicate that you are grinding your teeth and/or clenching your jaw while you sleep. You might wake up with tightness and pain in your jaw, or a headache, and swelling in your lower face. Other indicators include loose teeth and/or fillings, worn down enamel on the top of your back teeth, tooth sensitivity, and a receding gumline. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching at night are often caused by stress, but could also be the result of misaligned teeth, allergies, a sleep disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). As your bruxism is being diagnosed, our dental team will also try to find out the cause so your night guard may be combined with another treatment for more effective results.
What to Expect with Night Guards
After your bruxism diagnosis is made, impressions and digital x-rays of your mouth will be taken to create your custom night guards. Chestnut Hill Dental will send your specifications to a special dental lab where your night guard will be created with high-quality materials. When your night guard is finished and sent back to our office, you will return to our office for a fitting. We might make minor adjustments so your night guard fits properly and comfortably. We will also give specific instructions on how to care for your night guard so it lasts a long time.
Night Guards Follow-Up
For your night guard to be effective, you must wear it every night. Your night guard will diminish or eliminate the pain and dental complications caused by bruxism, but if it does not, please inform our staff so we can address other issues or try other options. To help keep your mouth and night guard in pristine condition, you should properly clean both your mouth and night guard prior to and after each use. We ask that you bring your night guard to all future dental appointments so we can adjust and repair the guard as necessary.
Night Guards Insurance Coverage
If you have been diagnosed with nocturnal bruxism or jaw clenching, part of the cost of your night guard may be covered by your dental insurance company. If you have dental insurance, our billing personnel can contact your insurance carrier to determine your benefits and coverage. During your preliminary appointment, we can discuss cost estimates, with or without dental insurance, and payment methods. To help you afford your dental care, Chestnut Hill Dental can help you apply for medical financing.
