Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, you will move to a retainer to maintain your results. Your retainer will protect the investment you have made in time and money during your orthodontic treatment by keeping your teeth in their new location while your gums and jaw stabilize. To serve the needs of our patients, Chestnut Hill Dental offers several high-quality retainer alternatives, including a fixed or removable retainer. Our Chestnut Hill, MA dental team will guide you along the way and go over all your options.
Types of Retainers
At Chestnut Hill Dental, we offer our patients three types of retainers based on each patient's needs: a clear, fixed, or Hawley retainer. A Hawley retainer (the most common type of retainer) is made up of molded plastic, wire, and clasps that can be removed. A transparent retainer is inconspicuously worn just like a clear teeth aligner and can be removed from the mouth very easily. A fixed retainer cannot be taken out of the mouth and is bonded to the back of the teeth on one or both arches.

Best Candidates for Retainers
Retainers are advised for all patients after they finish an orthodontic treatment. Even though your teeth are in their correct position, a retainer will help to hold them there while the rest of your mouth adjusts. A retainer is great for younger patients who are still waiting for the rest of their permanent teeth to develop and while their jawbone is still growing.
What to Expect with Retainers
As soon as your braces are removed from your teeth, you can be fitted for your retainer. We will make an impression of your mouth and send it to a dental laboratory. Once your retainer is ready around 1 – 2 weeks later, we will schedule an office visit. During this appointment, we will make sure your retainer is comfortable before sending you home. We may also discuss how often you will need to wear your retainer as well as how to clean and store your retainer.
How long you have to wear your retainer will vary. It is usually recommended to wear your retainer until all your permanent teeth come in and when your jaw is done growing (normally in the early to mid 20s). With proper maintenance and regular inspections, your retainer can last a very long time. As the years progress and normal wear and tear occurs, your retainer may need to be replaced. In the meantime, you should practice routine cleaning and safely store your retainer when not in use. If your retainer is damaged or lost, call our office to be given a new one.
Retainers Insurance Coverage
A retainer may be included as part of your orthodontic treatment. During your consultation, we will tell you if there is an extra cost for your retainer. We will go over your retainer alternatives and cost estimates. If you have dental insurance, we will contact your provider to determine if any of your cost is covered, then calculate your out-of-pocket costs. Chestnut Hill Dental accepts many payment methods, including medical financing.
