Fluoride Treatment Overview
The importance of fluoride and its ability to improve dental enamel has been proven by the American Dental Association (ADA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Medical Association (AMA), and other professional organizations. Additionally, communities that add fluoride to their water supply have fewer problems with tooth decay and cavities. A natural mineral found in some food and the earth's crust, fluoride builds up teeth and bones. Best Candidates for Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatments can be given to patients of all ages, though it is usually used to treat younger patients who still have growing teeth or who have not developed a proper home oral care routine. Dr. Rosen also recommends fluoride treatments for adult patients who don't have fluoride in their drinking water or who are prone to cavities. Chestnut Hill Dental uses different fluoride formulas if you have specific needs, like neutral sodium fluoride if you have dry mouth and acidulated phosphate fluoride if you have dental restorations (bridges, crowns, and dentures). There are also different flavors to make these treatments enjoyable for all patients.
What to Expect with Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatments are usually performed every six months, following a dental cleaning. As soon as you select your flavor, the hygienist will prepare the treatment as either a gel, foam, or varnish. It will be left on for up to five minutes to allow the fluoride time to penetrate the enamel before it can be spit out. The hygienist will use suction to help clear your mouth after the treatment, but you may not rinse your mouth, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes after.
Fluoride Treatment Follow-Up
Nausea and vomiting can occur if you consume any fluoride, but this should diminish about a day following treatment. In some cases, our dentists give fluoride supplements to take at home. Since fluoride can be toxic in high amounts, adults should be careful and keep supplements out of reach of children. While these treatments help to strengthen the enamel, you should continue or establish a healthy home oral care routine, including brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You should also attend your scheduled exams and cleanings at Chestnut Hill Dental, so our team of dental professionals can re-assess your need for fluoride treatments.
Fluoride Treatment Insurance Coverage
Most dental insurance companies cover fluoride treatments for children, while adults may not be covered. Our staff works to find out the exact benefits from your insurance company before determining your out-of-pocket costs. For patients without insurance, Chestnut Hill Dental accepts many payment methods and can help you find medical financing if needed.
