What are Traditional Braces?
Traditional orthodontic braces are one of the best ways to align teeth and prevent oral health concerns that can be caused by teeth that are out of alignment. Braces can help patients of all ages get their teeth, jaw, and lips in the proper alignment to ward off tooth decay, chronic pain, gum disease, trouble chewing, and speech difficulties. Orthodontic treatments can also correct teeth that are overcrowded, protruding, or unevenly spaced, as well as crossbites, underbites, overbites, and jaw problems. Although braces are generally linked to younger patients, Chestnut Hill Dental in Chestnut Hill, MA can help patients of all ages get a healthier, more attractive smile.
"Dr. Calcano has blessed hands. I was so nervous before a recent dental procedure and she made me feel comfortable. I was done before I knew it and the best part is that it was PAINLESS. Highly recommend her and her staff."- E.A. / Facebook / May 25, 2021

"We've been coming to Chestnut Hill Dental for many years. The reason we've been loyal is because of the amazing service we've gotten and most importantly, the staff has been phenomenal. Lauren, Julia and Dr. Calcano are among the best. They always make us feel at home. On a side note, I wish I can say the same with the new receptionist. The younger one is cold and lacks friendly customer service. I was met with a cold response when I asked her a question. She is not very welcoming. We miss Erin."- A. / Demandforce / Sep 24, 2020
"My Hygienist, Julia, gives of the most thorough cleanings I have ever had. Great atmosphere and top notch facility. Highly recommended."- B.M. / Google / Sep 05, 2020

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Traditional Braces?
Braces can be fitted on any patient regardless of age. The primary concern when determining whether or not to move forward with metal braces is the state of the gums. Gum disease must be treated before any braces can be attached to the teeth. Therefore, if you've been suffering from swollen gums, bleeding when brushing your teeth, loose teeth, or gaps between your gums and teeth, you should consult with a periodontist before receiving braces. If your gums are in good health and one of the following conditions apply to you, you may be a good candidate for braces:
- Open bite
How do Traditional Braces Work?
Metal braces are personalized based on the patient's goals and concerns. The length of treatment will vary, depending on the complexity of the patient's unique case, but younger patients tend to take less time and the patient will often avoid other oral concerns. Metal braces are small brackets that are fastened to each tooth and are then connected with wires that gradually move the teeth into their correct position. Patients should return for monthly appointments in order to have the progress of their braces and teeth evaluated by our team of dentists until the braces are ready to be removed. While wearing braces, the patient may find it more difficult to floss and brush their teeth, but it is essential to follow a proper home care routine and keep the teeth well-maintained during the orthodontic treatment.
What Can I Expect After Clear Braces are Removed?
Once the braces are detached, the patient will usually be provided with a retainer to wear that will deter the teeth from shifting back to their original position. A retainer can be attached to the back of the teeth or created as a removable mouthpiece, depending on the patient's lifestyle and preferences. Patients should continue a good home dental care routine, including daily brushing and flossing, as well as scheduling regular appointments for dental cleanings and dental examinations.
